21 February 2013, Brussels – The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) will convene an international conference entitled “Global and Regional Security Challenges in South Asia: What Future for Balochistan?” at the Royal Society in London on Sunday 24 February 2013.
The timing of the conference is of particular salience in light of the recent bombings in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s largest province Balochistan. This region is often overlooked in political analyses of Pakistan and South Asia when it comes to security and stability in the region. Aspects such as Islamic extremism and talibanization, the struggle of the Baloch people in their claims for self-determination, the subsequent violent suppression from Islamabad, the militarization of the region and the influence of geopolitical players such as India, Afghanistan, China and the U.S., do not receive the necessary attention from the international community.
Akhtar Mengal (former Chief Minister of Balochistan, BNP President) and Marino Busdachin (UNPO General Secretary) will offer opening remarks to the conference. Leading the discussions will be Prof. Athar Hussain (London School of Economics), Tarek Fatah (international writer), Burzine Waghmar (University of London), Sanaullah Baloch (former senator in Pakistan), Anna Reitman (journalist), Nasser Boladai (Baluchistan People’s Party, Iran), Mir Sulaiman Dawood (Khan of Kalat), Abubakar Siddique (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty), Prof. Joshua Castellino (Middlesex University), Mehran Baloch (Baloch Representative to the UN) and Peter Tatchell (Spokesperson on human rights, Green Party, U.K.).
The contributions of the speakers will aim at identifying the different challenges the region is facing, by providing critical insights and recommendations regarding security and stability for South Asia and Balochistan.
Registration opens at 9.30am. Light lunch will be provided to the participants of the conference.
